Yanpyeong Police Station said Thursday that it had secured a video showing a man in his 40s breaking into Choi's tomb and getting away with the urn earlier this month. The video was taped by a surveillance camera installed near the tomb.
This means that the theft took place much earlier than police had previously believed. Police initially had suspected that the theft took place between 7 p.m. on Aug. 14 and 6 a.m. on Aug. 15.
According to police, a janitor at the cemetery in Yangsuri, Gyeonggi Province, found flowers littered around Choi's tomb, the tomb broken into and the urn missing Saturday morning.
Investigators are tracking ex-convicts who have committed similar crimes while making inquiries in nearby areas.
Actress Choi was found dead in her home in Seoul in an apparent suicide earlier this year. The 40-year-old Choi had been a national heartthrob for the past two decades appearing in numerous box-office hit films, dramas, and commercials.
