Assassins Revived After Four Years

Musical “Assassins,” a story about assassinations of American presidents by Stephen Sondheim and John Weidman, will be performed at The Stage Sept. 26-Nov. 8 in Sinchon, Seoul. / Courtesy of OD Musical Company

The musical ``Assassins'' will give a revival performance for the first time in four years since it premiered in Seoul in 2005.

The musical, depicting American presidential assassinations, by Stephen Sondheim and John Weidman, is deemed the most controversial musical ever written as it shows, from the point of view of the killers, the lives of various men and women who have committed or attempted to commit the crime.

The Korean rendition was first put on stage in 2005 at Seoul Arts Center and was well-received by audiences.

The musical creates imaginary and transcendental scenes by mixing history and fantasy and focuses on dramatizing stories of presidential killers. The revue deals with nine presidential assassins ― from John Wilkes Booth, who shot Abraham Lincoln in 1865, to John Hinckley who shot Ronald Reagan in 1989 ― questioning why presidential assassinations repeatedly happen.

It demonstrates that each presidential assassin is made to confront the fact that his or her act of meaningless violence failed to bring about the desired results, revealing the dark side of the American Dream, politics and culture.

The show premiered off-Broadway at Playwrights Horizons in December 1990 and sold out its first 73 performances. But the patriotic fervor in the United States at that time, resulting from the Persian Gulf War, prevented it from going to Broadway until 1992.

However, it began to receive critical acclaim for the release of the soundtrack, leading ``Assassins'' to earn five Tony Awards in 2004.

Renowned for various hit works such as ``West Side Story,'' ``Gypsy,'' ``Sweeney Todd'' and ``Company,'' Sondheim is praised for raising commercial musical shows to the artistic level, using his unique and creative styles and mixing provocative subjects.

This year's revival is co-produced by the two musical production moguls, the OD Musical Company and the Musical Heaven, and features a starry cast including Kang Tae-eul, Han Ji-sang and Choi Jae-woong.

The revival production will be upgraded from the 2004 rendition and will be staged in a small theater equipped with 230 seats to enhance the intimacy between actors and spectators.

The orchestral arrangement will be replaced by just two on-stage pianos.

The musical will be on stage from Sept. 26 to Nov. 8 at The Stage in Sinchon. Tickets cost 50,000 won. For more information, call 1588-5212.

What a big surprise for Lee Minho

I have never thought that Kim Hyun Joong is more popular than Lee Minho! I was about to vote this afternoon in Seoul International Drama Awards 2009 site when I checked the result for the best actor, I was surprised to see that Kim Hyun Joong is almost a million votes away from Lee Minho! and that's the result not just in Korea but in Japan and other overseas countries as well.

Also, I blogged once about "Actor Kim Bum of “The East of Eden” and “Boys Over Flowers” surprised everyone by winning the title of foreigners’ favorite new actor over his co-star in “Boys over Flower” heartthrob Lee Min-ho." but he doesn't even ranked in Top 10 of the overseas votes. Strange, strange, strange! Hmm...

Well, Kim Hyun Joong fans and Lee Junki fans goodluck to your idols and may the best man win!

Easier and Legal Sex Change for Korean Transexuals

Male-turned-female transsexuals will no longer need to fulfill their military service before changing their legal sex in family records.

The Supreme Court said Tuesday that it had revised a regulation on transsexuals' legal sex change approval to delete the clause stipulating that when a man changes his legal sex to female, he should have already fulfilled military service or been exempted from it.

The clause was designed to prevent men from dodging the mandatory service by getting a sex change. Male-turned-female transsexuals, who have not changed their legal sex, used to be exempted from the service due to their ``mental illness.''

``It was not easy to tell whether the applicants aimed to dodge the service or not, so we decided to remove the clause,'' a court official said.

The revision will enable male-to-female transsexuals to change the records more easily, he said.

Military service was one of seven conditions that the court prepared as a guideline in approving transsexuals' legal sex change after its first approval in September 2006. The guideline says an applicant should be aged 20 and over, have never been married and have no children; have suffered disparity between his or her biological sex and legal sex; have undergone a sex change operation; and be unlikely to change to his or her original sex again.

It also includes that the applicant has no intention to take advantage of the legal sex change in crimes; the change should not have grave influence on his or her family relationship or have negative influence on society; and the applicant, if a male-turned-female, should have fulfilled military service or been exempted from it.

As to the guideline, the National Human Rights Commission recommended last November the top court revise or delete it, saying it infringed on transsexuals' human rights. The court accepted the military service clause among the guidelines, along with the clause on influence on family relationship, and deleted them.

The number of those changing their legal sex is on the rise _ 10 people in 2006, 15 in 2007 and 29 last year. Among them, 48 changed from male to female, while six did so from female to male, according to the court.

Junjin rushed to hospital

Junjin's manager found him unconscious last June 22 at home. He fainted due to fatigue, could the leaking of his new single's music video "Like a Fool" triggered it? He stayed in the hospital for a couple of days and was released on the 24th.

There were rumors that his fainting was due to his pneumonia, (i guess it is possible because he smokes), but a representative from his company denied the rumors and stated that it was due to exhaustion.

Due to this incident, JunJin wasn't able to show up for the “Infinity Challenge” taping last July 23.

KPopsites wishes that he gets well soon.

Eclipse over Asia

Day has suddenly turned into darkness as a solar eclipse engulfed Asia this morning, almost dawn in some areas and 8 am in other parts of the continent. The eclipse that happened is the longest since July 11, 1991, when a total eclipse lasting 6 minutes, 53 seconds was visible from Hawaii to South America. The next solar eclipse will happen on 2132.

Asia being a diversed continent observed the event in different ways. In India, though, were gripped by fear and refused to come outdoors because in Hindu mythology, an eclipse is caused when a dragon-demon swallows the sun, while another myth is that sun rays during an eclipse can harm unborn children.

On the tiny Japanese island of Akuseki, where the total eclipse lasted 6 minutes and 25 seconds, more than 200 tourists had to take shelter inside a school gymnasium due to a tornado warning. While in China, jubilant eclipse watchers in China set off fireworks near the banks of the Qiantang River in coastal Zheijiang province as skies darkened overhead for about six minutes. Visitors from Britain, Germany and Australia joined curious Chinese onlookers. The heavy clouds blocked the full eclipse but watchers saw a partial one.

Here in the Philippines, the Weather Bureau expected cloudy skies but clear skies prevailed although we were expecting only partial eclispe.

Anyway whatever our elders believe, we could only keep our fingers crossed as people my age believe that we create our own destiny. XOXO!

Jeong Hye-min, the leader of female group Gavy NJ, left the team a while ago, according to the group’s representative. Speculations about Jeong’s departure have been circulating the industry for some time, but her representative just confirmed the rumors after her management agency agreed to let her go. Jeong will take a break for a while before resuming her singing career. She has been a member of Gavy NJ for three years and eight months since the team was first formed.

As for Gavy NJ, a new member has already been selected. Still unknown to the public, the new vocal is currently recording an album with other members and the group’s new release will go on sale sometime in August.

(To tell you frankly, I don't know this group! hahaha! I hope to know and hear more of them.)

SS501 New Ambassadors

I think, Koreans are enjoying giving out the ambassadorial titles to Kpop artist? Remember Rain and Big Bang? Now it's SS501.

The boys were appointed as Goodwill Ambassador by the Korea Airport Corporation (KAC) yesterday July 13. They were at Gimpo Airport in Seoul to receive the appointment and oath-taking.

Though it sounds weird that the Airport Company gave it, Congratulations anyway!

What's up with the green shoes Kim Hyun Joong?
